FULL-SCALE IMPACT TESTS ON CAST-IN-PLACE CONCRETE BRIDGE BARRIERS
The paper presents results of a test program to evaluate the performance of cast-in-place bridge barriers with the standard New Jersey shape. Impact tests were performed on full scale specimens using an impact pendulum facility. A mass suspended by steel cables from a 15.24 m (50 ft) high steel frame forms the outdoor facility, with the mass consisting of a steel box containing removable steel plates, a bumper arrangement, and a load cell to measure the variation of the impact force with time. Presented are typical plots of load vs time, acceleration vs time, and displacement vs time; and performance characteristics are described in terms of response to a sequence of impacts of increasing severity.
