COMPILATION OF SCOUR DATA BASED ON CALIFORNIA BRIDGE FAILURES

This report presents a preliminary effort to assess and review the data that can be obtained from the existing files of a large state highway department (California, in this case) regarding bridge pier scour. Scour data from twelve bridge sites were obtained from the California Department of Transportation and flow data were obtained from the U.S. Geological Survey, the California Department of Water Resources and the Ventura Flood Control District. At least half of the twelve cases provide significant scour data that can be used for rough bridge scour analysis. Detailed recommendations for further field investigation on bridge scour are also included. /Author/
