SYNTHESIS OF THE DECISION SIGHT DISTANCE CONCEPT FOR HIGHWAY DESIGN AND TRAFFIC CONTROL REQUIREMENTS

The purpose of this study is to critically evaluate the state-of-the-art of knowledge pertaining to decision sight distance and related factors. This information is synthesized with applicable design and traffic engineering factors to achieve the following objectives. Critically assess pertinent literature bearing on the quantification of decision sight distance; quantify decision sight distance value appropriate for use by state and local highway agencies in evaluating highway designs and traffic control techniques; develop recommendations for additional research efforts to fill critical gaps in knowledge of driver's sight distance requirements. Recommended decision sight distance values and recommended application of decision sight distance are included in the study. It is recommended that more research, both field and laboratory empirical studies, be undertaken to quantify the time components of the various elements of the hazard avoidance process. A recommended two-phase research effort would be first to establish base line data for time and accuracy of hazard sightings under nominal transietn conditions for various fixed roadway and driver conditons. The second phase would be to determine the effect of increasingly extreme transient conditions on decision sight distance.
