GUIDELINES FOR CONSTRUCTION OF SERVICEABLE CRUSHED STONE BASES

This publication presents recommended procedures for the construction of graded crushed stone base layers in all types of pavement structures, primarily flexible pavements. Section I, presents defitions to distinguish high quality graded crushed stone base from other types of "granular material", pointing out the advantages offered by crushed stones. Section II, cites inherent qualities derived from the native rock being quarried along with important properties governed by modern production methods. Section III, points out the value of careful advance planning, preliminary site work, and good drainage during construction and as a permanent part of the pavement structure. Section IV, lists seven steps which, if followed carefully, will maximize the probability of success. Section V, cites the extreme importance of thorough compaction, and clarifies the precautions to be taken to make certain that adequate compaction of the base is achieved.
