THE ENGLISH COUNTRY LANE AND ITS FUTURE
The article begins with a history of the development of the country lane in Great Britain. These often narrow, mostly undeveloped, roads are being threatened by increasing traffic. The article outlines the conflict between the recreational users, local commercial users, rural preservationists, historical interests, and police and highway authorities over the use and preservation of these primitive minor roads. A discussion of the national park system in England and Wales is included. The author discusses the need for traffic control, regulation of use, and a clear determination of decision-making responsibility.
