This paper concerns Radio Telephone operation on the international calling and distress frequency of 2182 kHz. Since 1973, numerous users of this radio service have registered complaints of limited operating range when operating newly installed single-sideband transceivers in the compatible AM(AME or A3h) mode. Presently A3h equipments are the only type that are permitted for new installation on vessels for use on 2182 kHz by international agreement. This paper offers theoretical analysis and provides test results of mode comparison for AM, AME, and SSB emissions based on the authorized power levels for these modes on 2182 kHz. The author also explores the feasibility of using single-sideband reception for 2182 kHz taking into account the frequency tolerance of older A3 transmitters and its effect upon intelligibility. Reception of Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) and the 2182 alarm signals are also considered. The author shows that A3h users have lost operating range in the conversion from A3; some of this can be reclaimed by using single-sideband reception.
