COAST GUARD COMMUNICATIONS STATION PORTSMOUTH--HUB FOR ATLANTIC AREA COMMUNICATIONS

On 17 June 1976 a new era in Atlantic Maritime Communications began with Coast Guard Communications Station Portsmouth (COMMSTA PORTSMOUTH) going "on-air". Seven years in planning, this $8 million dollar facility incorporates the latest in high frequency and medium frequency radio technology. It will serve the Atlantic Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR) Region until the 1990's when the Coast Guard Communications System transitions to satellite technology. COMMSTA PORTSMOUTH, the heart of the new Coast Guard Atlantic Area Communications System, significantly increased both the reliability and quality of communications coverage in the Atlantic. The primary operation/engineering concept of the station is to provide maximum direct capability to the individual radio operation.
