REMOTE CONTROL AND STEERING OF A TOWED VESSEL
The Author's firm, Radio Holland BV, was asked to develop a remote-control system enabling a tug to steer and control a self-propelled towed vessel manned by a small crew. The two omni-directional propulsion units on the towed vessel (which would appear to be a barge) would be used for steering. The radio-control system developed for this task includes twin transmitters and receivers in both the tug and the barge. The control console in the tug receives radio-communicated information from the barge, including engine rpm, propulsion-unit angle, audio and visual alarms, an answer-back signal to confirm call-ups, and a "deadman's" alarm requiring periodic inactivation.
