THE USE OF PLASTIC FABRIC FOR PAVEMENT PROTECTION DURING FROST BREAK

Studies were conducted in three phases: analysis of different bearing capacity parameters using multilayer elastic theory, laboratory model studies and a pilot study using full scale thickness of layers. Different two layer systems, with a frost susceptible subgrade under a friction material layer, separated by a plastic fabric were investigated. Control tests without fabric were also carried out. In the laboratory model study a two layer system was subjected to repeated loading in a fatigue tester. The modulus of elasticity and the permanent deflection of the pavement were measured. In the pilot study, in which a bituminous surfacing was protected, every sign of cracking was monitored. After the loading phase the interface between the two layers was analyzed in order to establish the water and subgrade soil migration. The results show no clear effects of the fabric upon the elastic deflection but the effects upon the occurrence of failure are considerable. The fabric has a certain effect on the vertical water migration and a considerable filtering effect in preventing the migration of fine particles. /TRRL/
