A NEW METHOD FOR RATING FLUCTUATING NOISE
This report presents a new method for physical rating of fluctuating noise which is relevant to the subjective annoyance reaction of a population. This method has relevance for many noise situations but in this study only noise from road traffic was considered. Recordings of nine traffic noise situations and connected subjective annoyance ratings from a previous investigation were used to analyse the new physical measure presented here. The novel idea in the new measure is that the fluctuations are viewed as amplitude modulations and that the amplitude modulation factor for certain modulation frequencies can be compared to the perception of the amplitude modulated noise of hearing.
