PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS IN DRIVING
The author presents a psychological view of the activities involved in driving, as they pertain to the driver. He notes that driving is an activity that requires a wide field of attention. The figure and ground in the driver's field of attention are constantly changing; and they are different for another inhabitant (perhaps a pedestrian) of the same road, and even of the same car. Driving is, in part, a social activity, as the driver has to realize that he is not the only driver on the road, and has to be responsible to other drivers and pedestrians. Some psychological factors involved in traffic accidents are aptitude, disposition, and faulty decisions. Some drivers are classified as psychopaths, and their social feelings are underdeveloped. They may not be as responsible as other drivers. The author also discusses the 'almost' traffic accident - a narrowly avoided traffic accident, and the accident-prone driver.
