THE INFLUENCE OF ROAD ROUGHNESS ON THE BRAKING AND STEERING PERFORMANCE OF CARS. A LITERATURE STUDY
VAEGOJAEMNHETENS INVERKAN PAA BILARS BROMS- OCH STYRBARHET. EN LITTERATURSTUDIE
A literature study was carried out with the object of compiling available information concerning the influence of road roughness on driving characteristics of cars and on driver performance in relation to traffic safety. The study has indicated the importance of road roughness and vehicle speed relative to their effect on the normal wheel force on the carriageway. Contradicting opinions, however, prevail as to the effect of this on braking performance. All investigations presented in this study showed that road roughness has a derogatory effect on steering performance. Drivers' visual, auditory and kinaesthetic information aquisition, as well as the ability to perform steering tasks of various kinds are clearly influenced by vibrations. Whether these influences are likely to be dominant enough to affect traffic safety has not been completely clarified. /TRRL/
