PHASE I OF A SURVEY OF SHIP STRUCTURAL DETAILS

The survey examines a number of structual details that are common to many ships in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the various existing configurations that have been designed to suite similar shipboard conditions. Data of sound and failed details is gathered from interviews, repair specifications, and all possible inspections aboard ships which are undergoing repairs or periodic surveys in several repair yards. Details on a total of fifty ships are to be examined before the survey is completed and an improved design theory developed for presentation in the final report to be published in the latter part of 1977. As a prelude to the final report, this paper presents basic data from the first twenty-five ships and gives background information on existing shipboard detail failure conditions.
