EFFECT ON FUEL RATE FROM DIFFERENT COOLING WATER FLOW TO THE MAIN CONDENSER
This study was made to enable Uddevallavarvet AB to select cooling water pumps for the two main condensers on newbuilding 298, a 485.000 tons d.w. turbine tanker to be delivered to AB Monacus, Sweden in 1978. The main propulsion units in the twin screw ship are two General Electric steam turbines each geared and coupled to a propeller shafting. Each unit develops a maximum ahead continuous power of 19343 kw at 80 rpm. The investigation was to take into consideration not only type and number of the cooling water pumps but also the effect on the overall fuel rate. Basis for the study was the effect of the sea water temperature and cooling water flow on the vacuum in the main condensers. Different condenser vacuum would affect the efficiency of the main turbines and different cooling water flow would affect the power requirement to drive the cooling water pumps.
