THE BUCKLING OF BARGES IN RIVER SERVICE

The author reports on observations of buckled barges and discusses the practical aspects of this type of failure while giving considerable attention to past investigations and research. Suggestions are offered to the barge building/barge operations industry. The buckling of barges used in the river trade has not been a major problem. However, the losses of both time and money as a result of the bucklings have presented themselves as problems warranting serious investigation and analysis. Some of the studies and investigations rely heavily on previous theoretical and experimental work done over the last 150 years, and the conclusions presented in these papers indicated that still much more needs to be known at the practical level. This paper addresses itself specifically to the types of vessels commonly known as the transversely framed river hopper barges.
