RESEARCH ON STEERING, MANOEUVRING AND CONTROLLABILITY OF SURFACE SHIPS
A general description is given of mathematical models, suitable to describe the motions in a horizontal plane of a manoeuvring ship. Model testing techniques are discussed which can be used to determine the coefficients of such a model. Special attention is given to the effect of shallow water, mud on the bottom and canal banks and to disturbances due to waves, wind, current and passing ships. Finally, some remarks are made with regard to the correlation of predictions of standard manoeuvres with the results of free running model tests and full scale trials.
