SPECTRAL METHODS OF DETERMINING DYNAMIC LOADING
It is frequently necessary to determine the dynamic load due to sea motions on an object placed upon a floating vessel. The object could range from a simple piece of machinery on a foundation to a large offshore structure transported by a barge. It is conventional practice to employ deterministic methods to this end. By deterministic methods, here it is meant to use a motion criteria with prescribed amplitudes and periods to determine inertial and gravity load due to vessel motion. Such practice takes little account of actual periods of the vessel, the ability to change (or control) natural periods, and certainly determinable sea states likely to be encountered. This paper describes a relatively straightforward method to determine dynamic loads on objects subject to vessel motion loading with consideration of the actual characteristics of the vessel on which it is placed and the sea conditions to be encountered. In addition several example applications are described.
