IS IT REALY TRUE THAT GAS TURBINES ARE COMPETITIVE IN MERCHANT SHIP PROPULSION

During the last 10 yr, gas turbines have been used as propulsion plants for warships on an ever-increasing scale. It has recently been noticed that there is also a tendency to use gas turbines as propulsion units for merchant vessels. For this reason, it is being examined in this paper whether or not gas turbines are today, and will be in the near future, really competitive as propulsion units for merchant vessels. For this purpose, an economic analysis of various merchant vessels with gas turbine propulsion plants has been carried out and, to have a means of comparison, the transport costs of such ships with diesel and steam turbine propulsion plants have also been calculated. The influence of the various parameters on freight costs is being examined, and it is shown under what conditions the gas turbine can be competitive as a propulsion unit for merchant vessels.
