SHIPBUILDING EQUIPMENT AT MITSUBISHI

The paper is presented in three parts. Part (1) deals with the design and application in a shipyard of the horizontal fillet welding system newly developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. This makes use of a welding robot which is capable of carrying out continuous automatic MIG welding on an assembly lattice. Experience with a prototype model of the system in the construction of a panel block of a 150,000-dwt tanker is summarised. An automatic sub-assembly machine described in Part (2) automatically lifts, hauls, positions and tack welds stiffening members to a conveyor-transported web plate to fabricate a deck, side or bottom transverse of the ship web frame. The machine is now in successful operation in the Koyagi shipyard. Part (3) describes a centrally controlled pipe processing system for the automation of various phases such as fabrication, assembly and handling of small and medium-sized straight pipes in pipe shops. An outline of the N/C data generation system is presented.
