SPRADIS--A SHIPYARD PRODUCTION AND CONTROL SYSTEM

SPARDIS is an acronym for the Scheduling Planning and Reporting Data Information System in use by the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company of San Diego. As a tool designed to assist in the scheduling and planning activities associated with the construction of ships, SPARDIS uses a numbering system as the key to the information base. This numbering system is used throughout the shipyard so that a number assigned to a part is the same number used by the Engineering, Material and Production departments. Four Master Files (Description, Schedule, Structure and Routing) form a planning base from which work is released and monitored throughout the shipyard. All the subsequent information in SPARDIS, e.g. Work Authorized and Released File, Inventory Status File, etc. is created from these Master Files. The paper examines the application of SPARDIS to the installation of a pump room package, prior to erection of the 30-ft. flat.
