THE APPLICATION OF NUMERICAL CONTROL SYSTEMS TO PLAN PRODUCTION OR N/C PART DEFINITION CAN MEAN PLANS TOO
Parts definition language used to describe ship's parts for N/C fabrication can also be used to assist the designer/draughtsman in producing ship's plans. Expanded coding techniques developed by General Dynamics Quincy Shipbuilding Division allow the efficient application of the AUTOKON Parts Program to provide the interface between the draughting function and the numerically-controlled flat-bed plotter. The general approach has been to prepare a series of macros devoted to performing basic geometry tasks. These macros are written as building blocks which condense any number of instructions into a one statement call and which include related entering parameters. The drafting macros are placed in the permanent system library within the data base and assigned a mnemonic title of "DRA" (draw). Examples are shown of some of the basic DRAs developed and their use in the preparation of plan formats.
