METRO HEAVY RAIL MID-LIFE OVERHAUL NEEDS ASSESSMENT: BALTIMORE, MARYLAND
The first vehicle entered revenue service for the Baltimore Metro rail in late 1983, and the last one in January 1987, which means that all cars are at or exceeding their 15 year revenue service life. Maryland Mass Transit Administration has initiated a mid-life overhaul program for the system. This paper discusses the overhaul needs assessment, the technical specification development as well as the vendor bidding and selection. The paper provides insight into the various issues that might be encountered during the overhaul and discusses the feasibility issues faced when making decisions regarding equipment modifications.
