HAND MANOEUVRED ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE SYSTEM FOR INVALID CARS. 2. THE POSITION AND DESIGN OF HAND CONTROLS

HANDMANOEVRERADE GAS- OCH BROMSSYSTEM I HANDIKAPPBILAR. 2. HANDREGLAGENS PLACERING OCH UTFORMNING

The aim of the study was to achieve a basis for the design and position of standard control equipment for the hand control of servo assisted accelerator and brake systems. The study comprises a theoretical and an experimental part. In the former the technical and ergonomic conditions for the design and position of the controls are analysed. From this and former studies two controls placed below the steering wheel were chosen for the experimental simulation study. The first control was a lever fixed below the steering wheel near the steering column. For acceleration the lever was moved from the "one o'clock" position to the "four o'clock" position and parallel with the steering wheel. For braking the lever was moved in direction from the driver and parallel with the steering column. The second control was a clamp control fixed to the steering column and designed as an arc below the steering column. The clamp was moved towards the steering wheel for acceleration and from the steering wheel for braking. The controls were tested by 24 handicapped. The clamp control was preferred both by the handicapped used to lever controls and by those who had never used hand controls. The reason was the advantageous position and the logical direction of movement of the clamp control. /TRRL/
