DESIGN, MANUFACTURING AND OPERATIONAL PROBLEMS WITH SEA WATER SYSTEMS

This Paper gives a brief outline of certain problems experienced over recent years with components and production processes and is seen as not being complete. Detail is given to problems in manufacture, butt welding and micro cracking in alloy pipework, defects arising from polluted waters in seawater systems, marine fouling and cathodic protection. The reclamation of propeller and stabiliser shafts and non-destructive testing and examination are also described. The Author concludes that manufacturers must be persuaded to overcome their apparent reluctance to meet the high standards of compositional and process controls demanded by Naval service conditions and the operator must appreciate the consequences of some of his actions on the life of his sea water systems.
