THE PREVENTION OF DEGRADATION OF COMPOSITES IN HULL STRUCTURAL APPLICATIONS
This Paper reviews the problems associated with the introduction into Naval service of GRP as a material for a large displacement hull structure and their successful solution. The test programme covered structural experiments, fire and shock trials, and exposure to solar heat, marine fouling and the large range of organic materials in service use. The programme included the construction of a replica coastal minesweeper, HMS Wilton, in GRP using machinery and equipment from an existing CMS. The seagoing experience, including deployment to Suez Canal, over the last two years are discussed. The degradation associated with other composites still in the developmental area as far as marine applications are concerned is also briefly described. Order from: BSRA as No. 46,558.
