OPEN TRANSPORT NETWORK: INFORMATION INTEGRATION THROUGH A SINGLE PLATFORM USING FIBRE-OPTICS
Communication transmission capacity is an important requirement for urban transit companies, whether it relates to a metro, a bus terminal control center, or transportation infrastructure that reaches the outskirts of the city. This article examines fiber optic communications as ideal for implementing safety and integration requirements that also provides total control over an operating system by ensuring constant availability of the communications network. The article focuses on the Open Transport Network (OTN) that offers a fiber optic transmission system consisting of nodes located at different sites of a transit company, connected in a ring topology. At each node, a set of interface cards connects the different applications, such as voice, data and video. The interface cards are interchangeable and hot swappable, allowing the system to be reconfigured or upgraded without interruption.
