CORROSION PROBLEMS WITH MARINE DIESEL ENGINES

This Paper deals with problems encountered in ships of the Royal New Zealand Navy in three main areas of Diesel-engine operation. These are the fuel-injection system, the cooling-water jacket and the crankcase. Corrosion failures in the combustion chamber have been known to occur but appear to be less frequent. The Paper deals with these from both the historical and scientific viewpoint. It also points out that research work in these areas is still in progress and that considerable work remains to be done.
