CONSIDERATIONS ON THE STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF HIGH-PERFORMANCE MARINE VEHICLES

The structural trials data from several planing hulls and one high length-to-beam ratio surface-effect ship are discussed. The collected data are used to modify several well-known methods of predicting hydrodynamic loadings and structural response of planing hulls, hydrofoils, air-cushion vehicles, and surface-effect ships. The merits and weaknesses of these and other less well-known methods are discussed. Simplified methods, developed by the Authors, are presented for determining design-limit pressures for the vessels concerned which should produce consistent, but not too conservative, results. The data and methods presented are intended to allow designers to make more intelligent choices for hull loadings, depending on the craft service requirement, the level of detail desired, and the amount of time and manpower available for the design. The numerical examples included demonstrate the general utility of the methods.
