MODELS FOR PREDICTING SURFACE SETTLEMENTS DUE TO SOFT GROUND TUNNELING
Surface settlements due to tunneling in soils are traditionally estimated using the Gaussian distribution model. Yet, field observations have suggested that cited procedure tends to overestimate the maximum settlement directly above the tunnel and underestimate settlements at a distance from the centerline. This paper presents a settlement model that combines empirical equations with numerical modeling results and the Gaussian error functions to develop a settlement model that can estimate both the maximum surface settlement and the distribution of settlement within the settlement trough.
