ABRASION-RESISTANT COATINGS AND THEIR APPLICATION TO ICE TRANSITING SHIPS
The results of both laboratory and field wear tests are presented on the application of coatings to ice-transiting ship hulls. When these solventless formulations (an epoxy and a polyurethane) have been applied to icebreakers and tugs in field tests, they have withstood ice abrasion and improved ship performance. Model tests were conducted on the POLAR STAR hull form to identify high wear areas and to measure their individual contribution to ice resistance. The savings in operational expenses that would result from the use of these coating applications is illustrated for a typical icebreaker.
