BRAKE PERFORMANCE MONITORING FOR COMMERCIAL VEHICLES USING ESTIMATED TIRE-ROAD FRICTION INFORMATION
The idea of identifying slippery road conditions to improve safety is rather old, but still no commercial system is available. The brake performance monitor (BPM) is a new approach for tire/road friction detection for commercial vehicles. The BPM uses only information from known wheel speed sensors used by ABS or EBS (Electronically controlled Braking System) and other information available on the vehicle's CAN bus. No additional sensors are necessary. It is the target of a common project between WABCO and NIRA Dynamics to prove the reliability of this function. Afterwards an integration of the algorithms into the EBS is intended. A basic approach from NIRA Dynamics is adapted to commercial vehicles together with WABCO along with the European research project Chauffeur II. The output of the BPM shall allow the trucks in automated driving mode to react like a human driver and e.g. increase following distances on slippery road surfaces or reduce vehicle speed in dangerous situations. However, the system can contribute to ACC systems (adaptive cruise control) as well or deliver input to an internet-based map with dynamic data on road conditions, to mention a few other applications of the technology.
