TRANZ RAIL RESTRUCTURES TO FACE THE FUTURE

Since 2000, New Zealand's Tranz Rail has faced uncertainties about its restructuring, its financial strength and its change of emphasis to concentrate on freight. The reasons for the decision to focus on freight transport are outlined. Tranz Rail was restructured to form three operating groups: Rail Services, Interislander Services and Distribution Services. Measures to improve service and reliability are outlined. These included outsourcing of locomotive and wagon maintenance. Intermodal efficiency has been improved by increasing port operations and developing freight villages outside city centres. The implications of the New Zealand Government's transport policy for the rail industry are considered.
