SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI-ELDERLY AND HANDICAPPED TRANSPORTATION NEEDS
The objective of this report is to examine those problems involved in using public mass transit systems for the handicapped and elderly. Federal statutes regarding the rights of the elderly and handicapped are described as well as the methodology used in the study of the target groups. Transportation barriers to the transit limited and the transit dependant can be alleviated and the physical incapacities minimized through technology. The study recommends that consideration be given to the increasing number of those persons eligible for a transportation program for the elderly and handicapped. The following different types of handicaps are described within the scope of the special transportation program: Mental impairment; visual impairment; and physically impaired. Additional features of accessibility will increase the usability of public mass transit. Other items besides the transit vehicle must be attended to in order to meet the needs of the elderly and handicapped, these include: Bus shelters, curb cutdowns, bus driver attitude orientation, ongoing review of the needs of the elderly and handicapped and ongoing review of the level of service which they receive on a daily basis.
