EVALUATION OF PAVEMENT OVERLAY DESIGN TEST SECTIONS: I-95 BANGOR-VEAZIE AREA

The Maine Department of Transportation has since March of 1969 been conducting a research study of different surface treatment of old pavements prior to repaving to reduce reflective and non-reflective cracking in the bituminous overlay. In addition to the 11 overlay design sections, the existing pavement was completely removed and replaced in a section at the beginning of the project. There was less cracking in the section where the pavement was completely removed and also the best cracking ratio. The pavement breaker treatment resulted in significantly better results when compared with the other overlay sections. The cracking ratios were close behind the section that had the pavement removed. In addition to surface treatments, different types of mixes, asphalt contents and bitumen were used. /Author/
