SHIP OPERATION AUTOMATION II
Since the first IFAC/IFIP Symposium on Ship Operation Automation in 1973, the field of its application of computers of advanced instrumentation and of other shipboard and shore-based automation devices to improve the operation of ships at sea, to enhance the economics of their use, and to relieve the crew of undesirable and unnecessary tasks has proceeded apace despite the depressed economic conditions which have gripped the whole maritime industry during the period between the two symposia. The papers presented here report on all aspects of the field as it has developed. This includes the latest developments in bridge design to allow efficient operation by one and two man bridge watches. They cover new and improved navigation techniques for course keeping, for heavy weather avoidance, and for safe harbor and estuary transit avoiding possible collisions and groundings. Both steam and diesel engine monitoring and control systems are covered to include the areas of microcomputer controller applications, maintenance prediction monitoring and unmanned engine room operation. The increasing important area of the management control of the operation of large fleets especially through the media of satellite communications is well covered. The equally important area of the human interface to the equipment involved is also treated in depth in the paper included here.
