HEADLAMP ILLUMINATION MEASUREMENTS IN REAL TRAFFIC SITUATIONS. PART 1: A PILOT STUDY TO EVALUATE THE DATA ACQUISITION AND ANALYSIS SYSTEM
This report describes the application of the NAE/NRC mobile real-time data acquisition system to collect statistical headlamp illuminance data in real traffic situations. The illuminance produced by a single vehicle's headlamp at the curbside and the regulatory mounted road sign locations was obtained for a number of individual vehicles travelling a straight section of highway. Problems associated with the method used for recording a continuous sample of single vehicle illuminance data are discussed in detail. The report concludes that the method can be used to acquire illuminance and glare data for a large number of vehicles, henceforth, obtaining a relevant statistical sample of the CAnadian vehicle illuminance output characteristics in real traffic situations. /Author/
