A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF VARIOUS TYPES OF VEHICLE DETECTORS

This report is a comparison between the different types of vehicle detectors and associated equipment. It covers practically all of the presence and motion detectors either being sold commercially or actively researched at this time, and includes radar detectors, ultrasonic detectors, induction-loop detectors, magnetic-gradient detectors, pressure-sensitive detectors, and magnetometers. The theoretical and practical aspects of the different classes of detectors are presented, including principles of operation, detection parameters, installation requirements, and relative costs. The survey is based on information obtained from manufacturers and the technical literature. Typical detector specifications and the characteristics of traffic-analyzer equipment are contained in the appendixes. /Author/
