TRIAXIAL STATE OF FAILURE IN SAND

This problem of setting up a failure condition and a flow-rule for a granular material in a general state of stress (a state where all 3 main stresses are different) is considered, and a true triaxial apparatus in which a sand sample can be subjected to an arbitrary state of stress and which allows measurement of the strains occurring along the stress-path is described. The apparatus is equipped with 3 spindles, one upper spindle and two side spindles, the former to give the sample a constant rate of strain in the vertical direction, and the latter two to control the strain rates in the horizontal directions, keeping the smaple as a whole horizontally fixed. Further details of apparatus are described and test results are presented and discussed. Conclusions relating to the increasing friction angle, a new failure condition (rupture condition contains 3 parameters which are dpendent on the void ratio), line ruptures, condition of normalcy, and the proportionality factor are presented.
