Up to the present time much attention has been paid to the perceptive factors of information-carriers, such as traffic signs, and this knowledge is so far developed that it can be laid down in recommendations and regulations. Much less attention has been paid to the cognitive aspects and to the place of traffic signs in the whole traffic system, although these aspects also affect the efficiency of the system. The functions that traffic signs perform, criteria that can be applied and research on these topics are discussed. /TRRL/
