PEDESTRIANIZATION OF THE CENTRAL CITY

Pedestrian planning typically follows the same general procedures utilized in comprehensive land-use and transportation planning. Walking remains a strongly negative experience. Recent renewal projects are analyzed and failure to provide pedestrian accommodations noted. A more user-oriented approach to pedestrianization of the central city is proposed. Performance goals such as psychological time, comfort, safety, orientation and information are discussed. Design precedents in the pedestrian galleria, arcade etc. Are reviewed. Macro scale urban design concepts are evolved in the context of U.S. Central city case studies. Significant micro scale physical indicators for pedestrian comfort, safety and amenity are evaluated. Techniques for visual surveys and exploitation of scenic and functional opportunities are made relevant. /TRRL/
