RELEVANCE OF STANDARDS

The current standards of geometric design are reviewed, and special consideration is given to mini-motorways (roads designed for cars only), and housing roads. Comments are made on design speed, design flow standards, geometric characteristics, gradients, cross sections, crawler lanes, interchanges, drainage, and road traffic noise standards. The most salient features of mini-motorways with particular reference to cost savings are: reduction in pavement thickness, reduction of structural depth of bridges, reduction of headroom of overbridges, narrower roads (thus less earthworks and landtake), and steeper gradients and tighter curves (therefore more flexibility in positioning of road). The planning and layout of housing roads are discussed. General conclusions are listed which relate to the general philosophy of design standards, design of road networks, the monitoring of design standards, and future research.
