A REVIEW OF THE NEW GERMAN STANDARDS FOR GRADE-SEPARATED INTERCHANGES

The design standards for grade separated interchanges for rural roads and regional motorways (RAL-K-2) are reviewed, and comments are made on the results of recent German research projects and on the main differences between British and German design practice. Special criteria unique to RAL-K-2 are noted. These relate to the direction of through carriageways of interchanges, the minimum spacing between noses of successive entrances, signposting, and the capacity of self-purpose roads at the junction of motorways and all-purpose roads. Comments are also made on junctions of 2 motorways (3-leg interchanges, 4-leg interchanges), junctions of motorways and all-purpose roads, grade-separated interchanges at 2-lane roads, sections of grade-separated interchanges, cross sections of slip roads, entrances, and weaving sections.
