SUB-SOIL INFORMATION--THE NEEDS OF THE CIVIL ENGINEERING CONTRACTOR
The overall need for sub-soil information as an aid to construction is discussed, and an attempt is made to assess the civil engineering contractor's requirements. The role of the specialist soil survey contractor is also considered together with the contractual relationships he forms with his clients. Notes are provided on soil survey practice aspects such as ground water, as well as information necessary for piling and geology. The need for adequate information is emphasized and the influence of this information on civil engineering construction costs and contractors pricing is discussed. The provision of and the use of soil survey information is a matter for all round cooperation between engineer, soil survey organization, and civil engineering contractor. The amount of sub-soil information and the character of this information are discussed as well as the presentation of the information. Comments are made on the difficulties inherent in measuring the various soil characteristics, and on the application of procedure to practical problems. The role of the soil survey specialist is examined, and comments are made on the soil-survey contract.
