SAMPLE EXPANSION IN THE CASE OF A DETAILED INTERACTION MATRIX: SOME PROBLEMS AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS

DE STEEKPROEFOPHOGING BIJ EEN GEDETAILLEERDE INTERAKTIE MATRIX: ENKELE PROBLEMEN EN MOGELIJKE OPLOSSINGEN

The sample data of a detailed interaction matrix (of for example trip or migration patterns) is characterized by high frequencies of small numbers: a large proportion of the interrelations has a sampled interaction frequency of 0, 1 or 2. Even with large samples such figures will occur. Applying standard sample expansion procedures will lead in this case to population estimates having typical and undesired characteristics. The paper deals with the drawback of these procedures and suggests some alternative procedures. /Author/TRRL/
