DEVELOPMENT OF THE LASER-BASED SYSTEM FOR ONLINE, NON-CONTACT AND REAL TIME MEASUREMENT OF THE PROFILE OF THE ROAD

This development was started through collaboration and with the sponsorship of the Ministry of Transport, Communication and Water Management of the Republic of Hungary and the Technical and Information Service on National Roads. The aim was the development of a computer controlled, non-contact, automatic road condition measurement laser system in which the sampling of the surface is made not only in spots, but also in a permanent laser line projected to the whole track and scanning the profile with high resolution. Such system can measure the true conditions of the road. This system provides an online, real time measurement of geometrical characteristics of the cross profile of the road. From these data the deepness of the tracks, the lateral and transversal cratering and wrinkling, the weighness index, and the road depth can be computed. The opto-mechanical part of the measuring system was mounted in a separate box located in front of the test car. The measurement is based on the distortion of the laser lines projected to the surface of the road by the triangulation principle, which gives us parameters of the distortion of cross profiling of the road. By the simultaneous measurement of the distance covered by the test car, the full mapping of the road surface topology can be evaluated and stored using a modern data acquisition system.
