HOT MIX ASPHALT VISIONS 2000 AND BEYOND: WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
This article is a partial excerpt from Chapter 4 of the document "HMA Visions 2000 and Beyond," a printed report compiled by several leading researchers in the Hot Mix Asphalt industry. The 'Visions' document describes the challenges and changes that will affect the future of the HMA industry and the National Asphalt Pavement Association. Many of the materials suppliers, HMA contractors, and public agency representatives interviewed for this report identified the availability of a qualified workforce as the most important issue facing the construction industry. The skills base required of a contractor's workforce to produce and place materials will likely change in the future. This section describes the major driving forces behind these skill changes and outlines the activities presently in place and those that will be required to provide a qualified workforce for the roadway construction industry in the years ahead.
