ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT COMPARISION OF A ROUNDABOUT VERSUS A SIGNALIZED INTERSECTION; COLORADO STATE HIGHWAY 82 ENTRANCE TO ASPEN: FINAL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT
The State Highway 82 Entrance to Aspen Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) developed a unique transportation solution for the City of Aspen, Colorado. The stated purpose of preparing the FEIS was to address the transportation capacity inadequacies and safety problems of the State Highway 82 study corridor while avoiding or minimizing adverse environmental impacts. Part of that unique transportation solution was to develop a roundabout at the intersection of State Highway 82 and Maroon Creek Road. This intersection is surrounded by federally protected and publicly owned open space. This paper describes the transportation issues and environmental conditions surrounding the intersection and the reason for selecting a roundabout over an improvement to the existing signalized intersection.
