TRANSPORT: TANKER MARKINGS AND HAZARDOUS LOADS
The article discusses the regulations associated with the transport of dangerous chemicals which require road tanker markings to indicate the type of chemical being carried. A code of practice issued by the chemical industries association gave information for operators on the safe movement of hazardous loads. A development of this code is the hazchem scheme developed by the UK health and safety executive which requires a composite sign to be displayed on a tanker. This sign indicates the chemical being carried and which fire-fighting methods should be used. Developed in conjunction with the hazchem procedure is the trem internationally agreed transport energy cards. These are carried in holders on each side of a tanker and give information on the load being handled. The voluntary hazchem scheme is to be replaced by a mandatory system to be known as transport hazard information system (this) and is intended to control the conveyance of all hazardous substances by road. /TRRL/
