TECHNICAL INTEREST OF HARD BITUMEN

INTERET TECHNIQUE DES BITUMES DURS

An attempt is made to justify the increased use of hard bitumen (penetration 25 degrees C lower than 80) in road construction in France. The reasons put forward are as follows: (1) the stiffness of bituminous mixtures increases with the hardness of the bitumen; (2) if hard bitumen is used in bituminous mixtures, a marked increase in their resistance to plastic deformations (tracking) is observed; (3) this trend is followed in other countries such as Austria, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland. The use of 180/220 bitumen, which ten years ago was common, is becoming rarer in all countries; (4) the only countries which do not seem to follow the general trend are those with severe winters where the risk of brittleness would be too great. /TRRL/
