INFLUENCE OF QUALITY IN THE PRODUCTION OF SHIPBUILDING PARTS ON THE SUBSEQUENT HULL CONSTRUCTION PROCESSES
As an example of the influence of dimensional, geometrical, and positional accuracy in shipbuilding, the Author first summarizes some typical production faults and their causes, and the corrective action needed, in the prefabrication of a double-bottom section and in the joining of such a section to other sections in the erection of the hull. The first step towards the reduction of corrective action is a study of typical rectification work and its cost in working time; results from a preliminary analysis (made by activity-sampling in an East German shipyard) are tabulated and discussed. These results show, inter alia, that almost a quarter of the total production time is spent on rectification work; the proportion is greater in the more highly mechanised areas of production than in others. A more thorough analysis is needed of these and associated matters, and the Author discusses how this should be carried out, including how a differentiation should be made between different types of rectification. A satisfactory method of measuring the time spent in rectification work has yet to be found. The production costs of different standards of product quality are not usually available, and this makes the economics of alterations in quality very difficult to determine. Some information is, however, available on the basic relationship between quality and the cost of rectification, inspection, and quality control in general. These matters, and the determination of the working tolerances for production, are discussed. Rectification work can be reduced by the use of suitable tolerances and by the rationalisation of any rectification work needed. A number of recommendations are included on relevant research and development measures that should be taken by East Germany and her economic associates.
